Power-2-Industry coalition appeals to government

The Power-2-Industry coalition is calling on the government to get to work on electrification. In the coming ten years, at least 30 TWh of electricity will be needed to make Dutch industry greener, according to new research.

This week, TKI Energy and Industry presented the Electrification Roadmap, which for the first time provides insight into the amounts of power that are needed to make Dutch industry sustainable. It shows that a minimum of 30 TWH is required until 2030. TKI director Rob Kreiter told the FD that this is equivalent to approximately 10 gigawatts of offshore wind farms. The current planned capacity of offshore wind farms is about 11 gigawatts. A doubling is therefore required to make the industry sustainable.

Coalition

The Power-2-Industry coalition, consisting of companies, industry representatives, the energy sector and nature and environmental organisations, embraces the results of the study. It calls on ‘politics’ to take action in order to make the most of the sustainability opportunities.

Three action points

In concrete terms, the coalition puts forward three action points. Firstly, creating the right conditions – including subsidies – for industrial companies to become more sustainable. Secondly, more renewable energy must be generated. Thirdly, the electricity grid must be strengthened in time to make electrification possible.

The Power-2-Industry coalition consists of: Air Liquide, BP, Dow, Eneco, Energie Nederland, Engie, Holland Solar, LyondellBasell, Natuur & Milieu, NVDE, NWEA, Shell, VNG, VEMW and Vattenfall.
