In de haven van Rotterdam is het afgelopen jaar 6,9 procent minder overgeslagen dan in 2019. Daarmee bevindt de havenoverslag zich op het niveau van tien jaar geleden.

Bij de presentatie van de jaarcijfers had ceo Allard Castelein van het Havenbedrijf Rotterdam een aantal positieve punten onder de aandacht te brengen. Zo bleef de haven volledig  in bedrijf en pakte het financiële resultaat het afgelopen jaar hoger uit dan in 2019. Het netto bedrijfsresultaat bedroeg in 2020 477,5 miljoen euro, tegen 434,7 miljoen het jaar ervoor. Het havenbedrijf kondigt aan de investeringen de komende jaren voort te zetten in de energietransitie, infrastructuur en digitalisering. 

Dalende havenoverslag

Maar het pijnpunt was en bleef de dalende overslag in de haven, die in vrijwel alle segmenten viel waar te nemen. De krimp was in de eerste helft van 2020 (9,1 procent) sterker dan in de tweede zes maanden (4,6 procent). De overslag kwam in 2020 uit op 436,8 miljoen ton, 6,9 procent minder dan het jaar ervoor. We moeten terug naar 2011 om op ongeveer eenzelfde niveau (434,6 miljoen ton) uit te komen. Toen was de overslag fors geraakt door de gevolgen van de financiële crisis, waar die nu door corona wordt beïnvloed.

‘Matige vooruitzichten’

Hoewel het in de lijn der verwachting ligt dat de wereldhandel door de vaccinatieprogramma’s zal opleven, verwacht Castelein dit jaar niet op het niveau van ‘het topjaar’ 2019 te komen. Hij wijst daarbij op ‘de matige vooruitzichten voor economisch herstel’. “Zo zal de internationale mobiliteit naar verwachting ook dit jaar nog beperkt zijn met als gevolg minder vraag naar olie.”

The throughput in 2020 amounted to 436.8 million tonnes, 6.9 percent less than the year before. The decline was stronger in the first half of 2020 (9.1 percent) than in the second six months (4.6 percent). We have to go back to 2011 to arrive at about the same level (434.6 million tonnes). At that time, the throughput was strongly affected by the consequences of the financial crisis, which is now corona.

‘Moderate prospects’

Although it is expected that world trade will pick up because of the vaccination programmes, Castelein does not expect to reach the level of ‘the peak year’ 2019 this year. He points to ‘the moderate prospects for economic recovery’. “For example, international mobility is still expected to be limited this year, resulting in less demand for oil.”
