Shell investigates nuclear hydrogen production

Shell has entered into a partnership with US-based NuScale. The companies will explore nuclear hydrogen production.

US-based NuScale has developed a technology in which a small nuclear reactor produces hydrogen. This small modular reactor (SMR) does not emit CO2 during production.

Refining

Shell needs hydrogen for its refining processes. Currently, natural gas is used to produce hydrogen, which releases CO2. On the Second Maasvlakte in Rotterdam, the company is building a green hydrogen plant to produce hydrogen from offshore wind power. Nuclear hydrogen production can complement this.

Low-carbon

“We are pleased to join this collaboration, which is in line with our efforts to explore technologies that have the potential to enable decarbonization and support the energy transition,” explains Dirk Smit, Vice President Research Strategy at Shell. “Hydrogen has been identified as a pathway for global decarbonization and NuScale’s SMR technology complements this goal through low carbon hydrogen production,” said John Hopkins, CEO of NuScale.
