Shell contracts supplier of electrolyser

Thyssenkrupp Uhde Chlorine Engineers will supply the 200 MW electrolyser for Shell’s ‘Holland Hydrogen I’ project in Rotterdam. Both parties have signed a contract to this end.

This was announced by the German company this week. Under the contract, thyssenkrupp will engineer, procure and fabricate a 200 MW electrolyser. The design will be based on thyssenkrupp’s 20 MW alkaline water electrolysis module.

Planning

Shell has yet to make the final investment decision for the construction of the electrolyser. This is expected this year. Thyssenkrupp will start the first construction work this spring. The electrolyser should be in operation by 2024.

Net zero

The hydrogen plant consists of a two-hectare hall, where green hydrogen will be produced for industry and the mobility sector from offshore wind power. The plant must be net zero. Where possible, reusable materials will be used and solar panels will be integrated in the outer walls of the building.
