De Nederlandse staat verplicht Uniper om in 2030 zijn kolencentrale op de Maasvlakte te sluiten. Het energiebedrijf wil hiervoor een schadevergoeding zien.

Uniper stapt daarom naar de rechter. Het opende in 2016 de kolencentrale, op instigatie van de Nederlandse overheid. De installatie zou veertig jaar mee moeten gaan, maar moet door een in 2019 aangenomen wet in 2030 sluiten. Dat is 25 jaar eerder dan voorzien. Hierdoor kan de investering van 1,6 miljard euro niet worden terugverdiend, stelt Uniper.

Schadevergoeding

“Wij vinden dat de staat onrechtmatig handelt, als we moeten sluiten zonder financiële compensatie. We willen dat de rechter daar naar gaat kijken”, zegt directeur Hans Schoenmakers van Uniper Benelux in het Financieele Dagblad. 

‘Niet nog een keer’

Over de hoogte van de claim wil Schoenmakers zich niet uitlaten. “We willen in Nederland blijven. Uniper is gevestigd op een uitgelezen locatie voor waterstofprojecten. We hebben veel industriële klanten en een aansluiting op het hoogspanningsnet. Als we onze centrale klaar maken voor waterstof, vraagt dat gigantische bedragen. Dan wil je niet het risico lopen dat je over tien jaar weer hoort dat dit niet nodig was. Anders gezegd: we willen dit niet nog een keer mee maken.”

Uniper wants compensation for closure of coal-fired power plant

The Dutch state is forcing Uniper to close its coal-fired power plant in Rotterdam in 2030. The energy company wants compensation for this.

Uniper is therefore taking the matter to court. It opened the coal-fired power plant in 2016, at the instigation of the Dutch government. The plant was supposed to last for forty years, but has to close in 2030 due to a law passed in 2019. The closure is 25 years earlier than expected. As a result, the investment of 1.6 billion euros cannot be recouped, Uniper argues.

Financiel compensation

“We think the state is acting unlawfully if we have to close without financial compensation. We want the court to look into this”, says Hans Schoenmakers, director of Uniper Benelux in the Dutch newspaper Financieele Dagblad.

Ready for hydrogen

Schoenmakers does not want to say anything about the amount of the claim. “We want to stay in the Netherlands. Uniper is located in an excellent location for hydrogen projects. We have many industrial customers and a connection to the high-voltage grid. If we make our power station ready for hydrogen, that will require huge amounts of money. You don’t want to run the risk of hearing in ten years’ time that this was not necessary. In other words, we don’t want to go through this again.”
