OCI triples ammonia storage capacity

OCI is going to expand the storage capacity for ammonia at its terminal in Rotterdam. Next year, the storage capacity for ammonia will triple.

The fertiliser producer announced this week that it has taken a final investment decision on the matter. Its terminal on the Moezelweg in Rotterdam can currently store 400,000 tonnes of ammonia annually. With relatively cheap upgrades – the investment is about $20 million – to the existing infrastructure, the storage capacity will be increased to 1.2 million tonnes. This first phase will be completed next year.

Further expansion

After that, OCI is aiming for further expansion. It wants to install a large ammonia storage tank and expand the jetty, bringing a storage capacity of 3 million tonnes per year in sight. OCI will start the permit application for this this year.

Large flows

Initially, the ammonia will be used for the production of artificial fertiliser. In the future, green ammonia may be useful to meet the demand for hydrogen in Europe. OCI expects that hydrogen is needed in industry, the energy sector and shipping. The company expects to be able to store large flows of green ammonia from North Africa and the Middle East.
