Voedselketen

Niels Martha

Laboratory director wants earlier testing in the food chain

The earlier you test in the chain, the fewer products will be rejected at the end. This is the opinion of Niels Martha, director of the Eurofins laboratories in Barendrecht and Zeeuws-Vlaanderen.

At the Eurofins laboratory in Barendrecht animal feed and food ingredients shipped to Rotterdam are tested for quality and safety. Thousands of samples are taken every day. Laboratory director Niels Martha recently took over a second lab: the one in Graauw, Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Here, mainly vegetables and fruit are tested.

Earlier testing

Martha is not only striving for a closer cooperation between both labs, he also wants to try to test in the countries of origin. In other words, on the plantations and nurseries. This prevents products from being rejected in the supermarket, resulting in unnecessary costs and a burden on the environment.

Risk analyses

Unsafe food can be traced much earlier, Martha thinks. That is why Eurofins is going to start giving pro-active advice on plantations and nurseries. The laboratory company also makes risk analyses and monitoring plans with which it wants to offer producers, traders and retailers ‘grip on the chain’.
